Where to take mattresses and box springs in Montgomery County, MD

Unofficial lookup: recycling pad, commercial rule, what they will not take. Last checked 30 Aug 2026.

Hours, rules, and what they will take change. Confirm on the official How Do I page the morning you go. This page is unofficial and not the county. Not a hauler. The mattress How Do I page does not say contaminated items may go to the tipping floor as trash — do not assume that.

Which kind is it?

  1. Resident, dry, not infested, not a juvenile product — Shady Grove upper-lot mattress recycling pad (across from HHW). License scanned to track count. Numeric cap: not stated.
  2. Curbside bulk trash (County-provided trash service) — mattresses and box springs are listed as accepted bulk items. Five bulk collections per calendar year; schedule ahead. Bulk trash How Do I.
  3. Commercial load (stake body, open-top, etc.), in force since Wednesday 1 July 2026 — accepted only with a residential manifest verifying same-day collection within Montgomery County. No manifest → rejected. All other commercial mattresses turned away; not permitted for disposal on the tipping floor at any time.
  4. Wet / bed bugs / feces / blood / dirt-mud / broken-bent-folded — refuse (contamination list). Do not assume they will take it as trash instead — that is not stated.
  5. Futon, sofa bed, crib or bassinet mattress, water/gel/air bed without upholstery, unattached topper, pillows, sleeping bag, juvenile products — not the mattress program. Futon / sofa bed → bulk trash (non-metal furniture). Toppers: the How Do I A–Z list files “foam rubber cushions and mattress toppers” under trash; the trash How Do I page says curbside trash or Shady Grove, or bulk pickup if too large and you have County trash service.
