Buying a new mattress with delivery in California?
Retailer take-back · no extra recovery fee
California law (PRC §42992): the retailer must offer to pick up your used mattress for recovery at no additional cost when the new one is delivered. Delivery / set-up fees for the new product may still apply. Contaminated units that pose a health or safety risk may be refused. Common-carrier / many online deliveries: retailer must offer to arrange pickup within 30 days of delivery. Ask the retailer before delivery day. Bye Bye Mattress locator · free drop-off
Use the Bye Bye Mattress find-a-facility locator (link only — this page does not list sites). Program is for people based in that state; out-of-state units are not in the free program (Bye Bye FAQ). CA & OR: units accepted regardless of condition / purchase date (FAQ). CT & RI: recyclable condition; damaged / soiled / wet / infested — call the site; fees may apply (FAQ). Futon mattress that separates from the frame: accepted in CA only. Crib mattress: accepted in CT only (FAQ). Call ahead for unit limits and appointments.

Montgomery County, MD (or elsewhere outside MRC states)?
County rules · not Bye Bye Mattress
Maryland is not an MRC / Bye Bye Mattress program state. MoCo residents: use the live geo page mocodropoff.com/mattresses (Shady Grove mattress pad, commercial restriction, refuse list) and bulk trash for curbside bulk if you are on county trash. Other counties: contact your local waste authority — do not invent hours or caps here. Bye Bye home page: if the program is not active in your state, ask your city or hauler about bulky items.

Retailer take-back where you live (non-CA)?
Ask the seller · rules vary
A statewide no-cost take-back statute like California’s is not stated here for CT, OR, RI, or Maryland. Some retailers still haul away the old set when they deliver — that is a store policy, not invented on this page. Ask before you buy.
